There is no single document that sums up the experience of the Royal Navy officers during the Second World War. The speed at which new recruits passed through the training colleges to meet the voracious demands of war, meant few had a chance to gain real sea experience before they were thrust into positions of responsibility. This magnificent oil painting by John Wilson Carmichael shows HMS Victory lying off St. Helens in the Isle of Wight on December 4th 1805. On board is the body of Vice Admiral Lord Nelson awaiting burial until the preparations for a State funeral have been completed. Victory’s flag is flying at half mast and she still shows signs of damage following the Battle of Trafalgar.
